Toronto’s Youth show Sets Up a Tight Home Opener

The Toronto Maple Leafs open against the New York Islanders on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, at 7:30 p.m. ET at Scotiabank Arena. Toronto is playing the second night of a back-to-back after its season opener against Montréal on Tuesday, while New York is beginning its regular season.

The most attention will land on Gavin McKenna and Matthew Schaefer, the first overall selections in the 2026 and 2025 NHL drafts. Even so, this game may turn more on Toronto’s depth up front and whether the Islanders can produce enough offense to support Ilya Sorokin.

Why Toronto’s top end matters most

Toronto enters with multiple forwards who can change the game quickly, and that makes the home team dangerous even on short rest. If the Leafs get the pace they want, they can make New York defend for long stretches and force mistakes in its own zone.

  • Gavin McKenna is the young name drawing the biggest spotlight. The 18-year-old is expected to skate with John Tavares and William Nylander, which gives him two experienced finishers who can convert the chances he creates.
  • Auston Matthews remains Toronto’s most proven scoring weapon. If the Islanders devote extra attention to McKenna’s line, Matthews could benefit from more open looks.
  • William Nylander adds speed, vision, and touch around the net. His chemistry with McKenna and Tavares could become a major factor if the Leafs need a late goal.

McKenna’s first NHL game will be closely watched for his puck movement in the offensive zone. If he can create quick entries and find space, Toronto’s attack should look far more varied than a simple top-line effort.

How New York can stay in the game

The Islanders have a path to victory, but it likely starts with defense and goaltending. They need to keep Toronto’s rush chances under control, limit extended zone time, and let Sorokin absorb the pressure when breakdowns happen.

  • Matthew Schaefer gives New York a defenseman who can affect both ends of the ice. He won the Calder Trophy last season and now faces the latest No. 1 pick in a high-profile matchup.
  • Ilya Sorokin could be the biggest obstacle Toronto faces if he starts. The Islanders relied heavily on him last season, when he led the NHL in high-danger saves.
  • Bo Horvat is New York’s most established scorer. He led the club with 31 goals in 68 games last season and will need to be dangerous around the crease.

Schaefer’s status is worth monitoring after he missed the Islanders’ final preseason game because of an upper-body issue. If he plays, his ability to move the puck out of danger could be especially important against Toronto’s forecheck.

One lineup question could swing the matchup

Mathew Barzal remains a major variable for New York. The Islanders placed him on the injured non-roster list because of a knee issue, but he was expected to travel with the team and had not been ruled out for the opener.

If Barzal is available, the Islanders gain another creator who can tilt the ice in transition. If he sits, New York’s attack becomes much easier for Toronto to contain.

Who enters with the edge?

Toronto has the slight advantage because it is at home and owns more proven scoring depth. Matthews, Nylander, Tavares, and McKenna give the Maple Leafs several ways to generate offense, even if one line is shut down.

Still, the schedule adds some uncertainty. Toronto’s game on Tuesday could leave the Maple Leafs a little flat, and New York has a realistic upset path if Sorokin stands tall, Horvat finishes a chance, and Schaefer helps keep Toronto away from prime scoring areas.

Prediction: Maple Leafs in a close win. That call becomes less confident if Toronto looks sluggish in its opener or if Barzal is cleared to play for the Islanders.
