Can Nylander Extend Toronto’s Road-Trip Surge?

William Nylander arrives at the Delta Center with Toronto’s offense operating at full speed. After producing five points in the Maple Leafs’ 6-3 victory over the Colorado Avalanche, the winger will be central to the team’s attempt to close its three-game road trip with another win.

Toronto meets the Utah Mammoth Tuesday at 9 p.m. ET in Salt Lake City. The matchup features two teams with strong early records, but the most compelling battle may come between Utah’s powerful attack and Toronto’s outstanding penalty kill.

Nylander Reaches a New Offensive Level

Nylander’s performance in Colorado was more than an impressive night on the scoresheet. He scored twice and assisted on three goals, matching the highest single-game point total of his NHL career while moving beyond 700 career points.

The result also strengthened his position as Toronto’s leading offensive player through the opening games of the season. Nylander enters the contest with five goals, six assists, and 11 points, leading the Maple Leafs in goals and total scoring. His six assists are tied with Auston Matthews for the team lead.

When Nylander is attacking with this much confidence, Toronto gains a dangerous combination of speed, skill, and creativity. Utah’s defenders will need to limit his time with the puck rather than simply reacting after he creates a scoring chance.

Toronto’s Confidence Comes From Colorado

The Maple Leafs’ victory over the Avalanche provided an important test of their ability to compete against an elite opponent. Toronto scored six goals, received major contributions from its top forwards, and continued a stretch in which it has collected at least one point in three consecutive games.

Matthews supplied four points in the win, giving the Mammoth another major threat to track. If Toronto’s two premier forwards continue producing together, Utah will have difficulty focusing its defensive attention on Nylander alone.

The result moved Toronto’s record to 3-2-1. A successful finale in Utah would send the club home with additional momentum and reinforce the belief that its attack can remain effective away from home.

Five Factors That Could Shape the Contest

  • Nylander’s follow-up performance: Toronto will look for another productive night from its leading scorer after his career-level showing in Denver.
  • Matthews’ supporting production: His four-point performance against Colorado gives the Maple Leafs a second elite offensive centerpiece.
  • John Tavares’ availability: Tavares has joined the team in Utah after missing the Colorado game following the birth of his son. If he returns to the lineup, Toronto gains another experienced scoring option.
  • Penalty discipline: The Maple Leafs cannot afford to give Utah repeated opportunities on the man advantage.
  • Toronto’s road execution: Strong defensive shifts and controlled puck management will be essential against a balanced Mammoth lineup.

Utah’s Power Play Presents the Biggest Threat

The Mammoth have opened the season at 4-2-0 and return home after going 3-2-0 during a five-game road trip. Their success has been supported by a power play that has quickly become one of the league’s most dangerous weapons.

Utah has converted 40% of its man-advantage opportunities and has scored 10 power-play goals. That efficiency means even a small lapse by Toronto could change the game’s direction.

The Mammoth also have scoring depth throughout their lineup. Clayton Keller and Nick Schmaltz have each recorded eight points, while all 19 Utah skaters who have appeared this season have registered at least one point. Toronto will therefore need a complete defensive effort instead of building its plan around one opposing line.

Schmaltz deserves particular attention because of his early scoring form and his ability to create dangerous chances during special-teams situations. The Maple Leafs must keep him and Utah’s other playmakers from setting up comfortably in the offensive zone.

Special Teams Could Settle the Result

Toronto’s penalty kill gives the club an excellent answer to Utah’s greatest strength. The Maple Leafs have successfully neutralized 95% of their penalties, the NHL’s best rate entering this matchup.

That creates a direct contest between Utah’s league-leading power play and Toronto’s league-leading penalty kill. The team that wins those special-teams minutes could gain a decisive advantage, particularly if the game remains close at five-on-five.

For Toronto, the ideal approach is simple: stay out of the penalty box, force Utah to earn every entry, and clear rebounds before the Mammoth can extend possessions. For Utah, generating early pressure and drawing penalties will be the clearest path to exploiting Toronto’s defense.

Game Information and Final Outlook

Matchup: Toronto Maple Leafs at Utah Mammoth

Date: Tuesday, October 13, 2026

Start time: 9 p.m. ET

Location: Delta Center in Salt Lake City

Toronto record: 3-2-1

Utah record: 4-2-0

Toronto has the momentum, the league’s most effective penalty kill, and a red-hot Nylander leading its offense. Utah counters with home ice, a balanced scoring group, and a power play converting at an exceptional rate.

If Nylander can create another high-impact performance while Toronto avoids unnecessary penalties, the Maple Leafs have a strong opportunity to end their trip on a high note. If Utah repeatedly reaches the power play, however, the Mammoth could make Toronto pay quickly.
