The Edmonton Oilers and Vancouver Canucks are back at it Thursday, October 1, just two days after a chaotic opener that ended 6-5 in overtime for Vancouver. This one shifts to Rogers Arena, where the Canucks will launch their 2026-27 home schedule in front of their own crowd.
Tuesday’s game had almost everything: a 5-2 Vancouver lead, an Edmonton rally, and Paul Cotter’s overtime winner at 1:59. The rematch now asks a simple question: can the Oilers answer on the road, or will the Canucks repeat the result and start the season 2-0 against a division rival?
This game completes an early home-and-home series to open the season. That makes the stakes feel bigger than a typical October matchup, especially with the two teams already trading punches at full speed.
For much of Tuesday night, Vancouver looked in control. The Canucks pushed ahead 5-2 and seemed set to coast, but Edmonton kept pressing and turned the final minutes into a frantic comeback attempt.
The Oilers scored three times to force overtime, and that momentum nearly flipped the whole result. Vancouver eventually held on when Cotter finished the job in extra time, giving the Canucks a dramatic opening-night win at Rogers Place.
The game also exposed a warning sign for both sides. Vancouver showed it can score on one of the league’s most dangerous attacks, but it also let a three-goal lead slip. Edmonton, meanwhile, proved it can create offense quickly, yet it still has to tighten up behind the puck.
Several players already shaped the first meeting, and they are likely to drive Thursday’s result too.
Bouchard’s offensive impact changes how opponents have to defend Edmonton. If he keeps getting clean looks from the blue line or room on the power play, Vancouver cannot simply load up on McDavid and Leon Draisaitl.
The Oilers’ biggest issue is not scoring. They put up five goals and still lost, which is usually a sign that the game got away from them in other areas.
Edmonton needs a cleaner start, fewer defensive lapses, and better control in its own end. Another early deficit would force the Oilers to spend too much energy chasing the game again, and that is a risky formula against a team that can finish.
The special teams battle also looms large. When Edmonton’s top skill players get extra-man chances, any penalty can become a costly mistake for Vancouver.
The Canucks left Tuesday with two points, but they also know they were far from perfect. A 5-2 lead should have been enough, and nearly letting it vanish is the kind of mistake that can haunt a team later in the season.
At home, Vancouver will want to stay aggressive without becoming careless. If it retreats too far, Edmonton’s speed and puck possession can take over in a hurry.
The home opener adds another layer of pressure and energy, with the arena set for a bigger event atmosphere than the opener in Edmonton. That gives Vancouver a chance to start its home slate with back-to-back wins over the same opponent, while the Oilers can spoil the celebration and even the score.
Both clubs already learned something from the first game. Vancouver learned it can beat Edmonton, but not without protecting a lead much better. Edmonton learned it can rally fast, but not without defending at a much higher level.
The rematch should come down to which team controls the opening period and which side handles mistakes more cleanly. If Edmonton avoids another slow start, it has a real shot at revenge. If Vancouver brings the same scoring depth and cleaner game management, the home opener could end with another Canucks victory.
