Manchester United and Manchester City will meet in the first Manchester derby of the 2026-27 Premier League season on Sunday, September 13. Old Trafford is the stage for a rivalry match that could reveal a lot about where both sides stand this early in the campaign.
City arrive with a perfect league record under new manager Enzo Maresca, while United have looked uneven in domestic play. A 4-0 Champions League win over Sabah may, however, give Michael Carrick’s team a useful lift heading into the weekend.
This article breaks down the kickoff details, current form, team updates, likely lineups and the main betting angles to watch.
The match starts at 8:30 a.m. PT, 9:30 a.m. MT, 10:30 a.m. CT and 12:30 p.m. AT. In the United Kingdom, the scheduled kickoff is 4:30 p.m.
United have taken just one win from their opening three Premier League matches. Their league results have included a shock defeat to newly promoted Hull City, a dramatic 5-2 comeback against Ipswich Town and a 2-2 draw at Everton.
The Everton result will sting most, because United were close to taking all three points before giving up a late equalizer. That kind of lapse is exactly what City will look to punish.
There was better news in Europe, where Carrick’s side beat Sabah 4-0 at Old Trafford on Thursday. Benjamin Sesko scored in that game for the second straight match, after also finding the net against Everton, and that run gives United a more dangerous focal point in attack.
Even so, fatigue could matter. United have less than three full days between their midweek Champions League fixture and this derby, so Carrick may need to rotate or protect players who picked up knocks.
City have started the season in strong form, winning all of their Premier League matches so far. Their opening Champions League outing was also convincing, as they beat Porto 2-0 away on Tuesday.
That extra recovery time matters. City have had two more days than United to prepare for the derby, and that advantage could show late in the match.
Maresca is still molding the squad around his ideas and blending in summer signings, but the basic strengths are already obvious. City are comfortable controlling possession, and Erling Haaland remains the kind of striker who can decide a game with very few touches.
On paper, the visitors should arrive with the fresher legs, steadier structure and better recent league record.
United expect Marcus Rashford to be available after his recent injury concern was described as minor. Sesko should also be involved after recovering from a shin problem and scoring in consecutive matches.
There are still some absences to track on the home side. Carlos Baleba and Amad Diallo are expected to miss out, and a few players who featured heavily against Sabah may face late fitness checks because of the short turnaround.
City are likely to be without Jérémy Doku because of a calf injury. Nico O’Reilly may be available again after recovering from a back issue.
The final lineups are usually released about one hour before kickoff.
Carrick has more selection questions because of Thursday’s European match. Maresca, by comparison, has had more time to recover and may be able to field something close to his strongest available lineup.
United’s main job is preventing City from finding Haaland in dangerous central areas. If they allow too much space between midfield and defense, City’s creators will have a clear route to slip passes in behind the back line.
That makes compact defending essential, but United cannot simply retreat too deep for long stretches. If they spend too much time near their own box, City will keep recycling attacks, swinging in crosses and chasing second balls until a chance appears.
There is still a route for United to hurt their rival. Sesko’s pace and strength can be valuable in transition, especially if United win the ball and move forward quickly before City reset their shape.
City have been the more reliable side in the opening weeks and also benefit from the longer rest window after Tuesday’s European game. That combination makes them the cleaner pick.
United should not be written off entirely at Old Trafford. Sesko looks sharper, Rashford is expected back, and derby matches often ignore the logic of form tables.
Still, United’s defensive issues make it hard to trust them against Haaland and a confident City attack. A narrow away win feels the most likely outcome.
Prediction: Manchester United 1-2 Manchester City
These betting options stand out before kickoff:
The combined City win and both-teams-to-score market offers more risk, but also more upside than backing City alone. Player-based wagers are best left until the starting lineups are confirmed.
United head into the derby with some confidence after their midweek Champions League win, but the tight schedule and inconsistent league form remain real concerns. City have won every Premier League match under Maresca and have had more time to prepare, which gives them a clear edge.
United can make the game competitive, especially if Sesko continues his scoring streak. Even so, City look better placed to leave with a narrow victory in a match that should feature goals at both ends.
Best prediction: Manchester City to win
Correct score prediction: Manchester United 1-2 Manchester City
