Blue Jays Need One More Win to Stay in the Hunt

•

The Toronto Blue Jays head into Wednesday afternoon with a chance to leave West Sacramento on a high note and keep their postseason push alive. A win over the Athletics would give them another series victory at a time when every game matters.

Toronto sits at 73-73, just one game behind the Cleveland Guardians for the final American League wild-card spot. With 16 games left, the margin for error has nearly disappeared.

The finale is scheduled for 3:05 p.m. ET / 12:05 p.m. PT at Sutter Health Park, and Canadian viewers can watch on Sportsnet.

How Toronto Bounced Back After the Opener

The series began poorly for Toronto when defensive lapses helped turn Monday’s game into a 6-5 loss. The Blue Jays answered the next night with a cleaner effort, beating Oakland 4-2 to even the set.

José Soriano gave Toronto exactly what it needed on the mound. He lasted seven innings and allowed only two solo home runs, while Spencer Miles handled the final two frames to close it out.

That kind of workload management mattered. Toronto used six pitchers in the opener, so Soriano’s length gave the bullpen a much-needed breather before the deciding game.

A victory would mark a fourth straight series win and help Toronto preserve the momentum it has built during a tense stretch of the season.

Braydon Fisher Gets the Opening Call

Toronto plans to start Braydon Fisher, who is making his ninth start of the year even though most of his work has come in relief. The club is expected to treat the game as a bullpen day.

Fisher has posted a 3.20 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP across 70.1 innings, and he has struck out 68 hitters. The 26-year-old is also riding five straight scoreless outings.

He has already seen the Athletics twice this season and was perfect over 2.1 combined innings against them in March. That track record gives Toronto confidence as it builds its plan for the rest of the game.

  1. Fisher is likely to cover the first portion of the contest.
  2. Toronto will then hand the ball to a series of relievers.
  3. The rested bullpen should make that strategy easier to execute.

Brady Basso Brings a Short Outing for Oakland

Oakland will counter with left-hander Brady Basso, another pitcher who is not expected to work deep into the afternoon. The Athletics have used him mostly in a limited role this season.

Basso is 1-2 with a 4.32 ERA and a 1.41 WHIP in 33.1 innings. He has made four starts, and none has gone beyond three innings.

That setup points to plenty of bullpen action on both sides. Late-game pitching changes and matchup management could end up deciding the result.

Toronto also has a clear advantage on paper against an Athletics team that is 58-88 and near the bottom of the majors in run differential. Still, Oakland already showed it can slow the Blue Jays down by taking the first game of the series.

Okamoto Keeps Building a Special Rookie Season

Kazuma Okamoto has continued to supply Toronto with power in his first major league season. He homered in each of the first two games of the series, making him one of the top storylines in the lineup.

His solo shot on Tuesday was his 30th homer of the year, which made him the first Blue Jays rookie to reach that number. It also put him in a rare group, as only four other Japanese players had previously reached 30 home runs in an MLB season.

Josh Smith added to the damage by going deep just before Okamoto. It was Smith’s fifth home run since joining Toronto.

Why This Game Matters Beyond Wednesday

Toronto’s win on Tuesday lifted the club back to .500 and kept it within one game of Cleveland. The Blue Jays cannot clinch anything in this series, but losing ground to a struggling opponent would make the final weeks far more difficult.

The schedule tightens again after Thursday’s off day. Toronto returns home for six games against the Baltimore Orioles and Detroit Tigers, two more teams involved in the crowded wild-card race.

For now, the focus stays on finishing the trip correctly. A win over Oakland would lock up another series triumph and send the Blue Jays home with their playoff hopes still very much intact.
