Turkey and Paraguay meet in a match that already carries knockout-level pressure. Both teams lost their openers, both are on zero points, and the loser is almost certainly done after just two games.

Group D has quickly split into two camps. The United States and Australia took early control, while Turkey and Paraguay now need a result simply to stay in the race.

Why this game matters now

Turkey were expected to be one of the more dangerous sides in the group, but their 2-0 loss to Australia exposed a blunt attack and left them with no margin for error. Paraguay suffered an even tougher night, falling 4-1 to the United States and conceding three goals before halftime.

  • Turkey: must respond after dominating possession but failing to score against Australia.
  • Paraguay: need to recover their defensive shape after being torn apart by the U.S. attack.
  • Math of the group: a draw keeps both alive only in theory; a win is the only result that truly changes the picture.

This is the kind of match where one mistake can end a tournament. Neither side can afford a slow start or a passive second half.

Turkey need more from their forwards

Turkey’s return to the World Cup had real momentum behind it, especially with the team reaching the tournament for the first time since 2002. The problem in the opener was not territory or ambition, but execution.

Arda Güler remains the main creative spark, while Kenan Yıldız offers pace and direct running from advanced areas. Hakan Çalhanoğlu gives the side leadership, passing range, and set-piece quality. On paper, that is a strong core. In practice, Turkey need more movement, better final passes, and a sharper edge in the box.

Against Australia, Turkey had enough of the ball to threaten but did not turn control into clear chances. If that pattern continues, the pressure will shift sharply onto Vincenzo Montella and his in-game adjustments.

Paraguay arrive with a different formula

Paraguay’s path to this tournament was built on resilience. Gustavo Alfaro’s side navigated a difficult South American qualifying campaign and did enough to claim a place at the World Cup. Their identity is usually clear: stay compact, fight for second balls, and wait for transition chances.

That structure broke down badly against the United States, where Paraguay struggled to contain movement in wide areas and looked vulnerable when defending deep. The main task now is simple: restore order.

  • Julio Enciso: Paraguay’s most likely source of creativity and breakthrough moments.
  • Miguel Almirón: adds experience, work rate, and direct running on the flank.
  • Gustavo Gómez: central to organizing the back line and handling aerial danger.
  • Andrés Cubas: a key ball-winner who can help slow Turkey’s midfield rhythm.

Canadian fans also have a local angle: Cubas plays for the Vancouver Whitecaps, so this match includes a familiar face for viewers in Canada.

Where the match could be decided

The biggest question is whether Turkey can break down a Paraguay side that will almost certainly defend in a low block. Turkey have more obvious attacking talent, but they must show better tempo and cleaner decision-making in the final third.

Set pieces may matter as much as open play. Çalhanoğlu’s delivery is a major weapon, and Turkey should have an edge if they can win dead-ball situations around the box. Paraguay, meanwhile, will look to punish any overcommitment with quick counters through Enciso and Almirón.

Both teams know the cost of an early concession. The side that scores first should be in a strong position to control the game’s shape and force the other into uncomfortable territory.

Prediction

Turkey have the slightly stronger individual quality and the more urgent need to respond, which is why they get the edge. Paraguay are capable of making this awkward, but their defensive issues against the United States were severe enough to raise doubts about their stability.

Prediction: Turkey 2-1 Paraguay

Turkey should create enough chances to win if Güler and Yıldız are involved earlier and more often. Paraguay can nick a goal, likely through transition or a moment from Enciso, but Turkey’s attacking upside should prove decisive.

Kickoff is set for 11:00 PM ET and 8:00 PM PT at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, with Canada viewing available on TSN.
